读《民主的细节》有感(英文)

My awareness of democracy increases as time goes by. This time is because of this book and a discussion with a native American aged 65.

What puzzled me most is the correct understanding of the freedom of speech. From the book, I found it is the separation of powers that makes the fundamental right become possible. The rubber stamp won’t happen at the best limitation.

With that freedom, we can voice for our basic rights, while newspapering won’t be rooted out.

With that freedom, we can call on for disadvantaged groups, while the supporting people won’t be threaten by unknown department.

With that freedom, we can criticize our government face to face in the sun, while politician won’t eat us back by saying us knowing nothing about the “truth”.

The effect of separation of powers is self-evident that the system could fix itself by tolerating different voices and make a wise decision. When a new law hurts its people they could bring it to the Supreme Court as it is unconstitutional. And it is the constitution that provides its people relative fair circumstances.

With that foundation, freedom could survive.

With that foundation, an efficient government could lead the nation on the most proper direction.

Churchill said there is an only forever profit but not friendship between nations.

Thus, USA congress passed the bill to “defense” Iraqi’s freedom and security; from the talk the old American told me his mind. And he proposed that there are various methods the authority don’t against his opinion. But as a member of the people, what they can do is very limited. What’s more is, the improvement of a society is measured by how much rights its people can struggle. Some extreme people may also express their opinions but this doesn’t mean what he says will be put into practice and are accepted widely.

“You can say anything you want.”

They can, but our government promotes “harmony”, which everybody who has a waking brain knows the nature.

I had another question that why English speaker would like to learn a second language. The old man smiled and said different person has different reason. He has a lot Spanish speaker around him and he wants to communicate well.

When I asked him why these friends do not speak fluent English, he told me that USA welcomes all kinds of people from all over the world.

What about me? The same.
